Prezentul catalog nu este creaţia autorilor. Nu este nici creaţia descoperitorilor, unii dintre ei rămaşi necunoscuţi. Catalogul de faţă reprezintă o colecţie de obiecte care spun povestea creatorilor unei civilizaţii preistorice. Cultura Cucuteni. Depăşind toate realizările anterioare şi contemporane, dezvoltând motive decorative combinate în mesaje iconografice complexe, această cultură ne uimeşte în continuare cu realizările sale artistice de excepţie (Chirica, Boghian 2003, p. 148). Statuetele antropomorfe reprezintă cea mai interesantă categorie de artefacte produse în perioada eneolitică, descoperită până în momentul de faţă. Remarcate încă de la primele cercetări arheologice efectuate de specialişti, statuetele au beneficiat de o publicare şi de o atenţie care le fac notabile în cadrul tuturor rapoartelor arheologice şi monografiilor dedicate.

Realizate cu rafinament, unele dintre ele fiind adevărate opere de artă în ronde-bosse, aceste statuete uimesc prin modalităţile de transpunere a imaginilor antropomorfe. Care a fost scopul acestor reprezentări este o întrebare care suscită foarte multe răspunsuri posibile, precum şi ipoteze de lucru. Un aspect important de remarcat în ceea ce priveşte statuetele antropomorfe este faptul că ele, chiar dacă formal şi tehnologic seamănă, nu formează serii, fiecare exemplar fiind de fapt un unicat.
