Într-un prim subcapitol sunt analizate 1.1. Rudenia – scurt istoric al conceptului, cu referințe aproape numai străine, 1.2. Categoriile rudeniei, 1.3. Terminologia rudeniei, după care autoarea dezbate viziunea evoluționistă a părintelui acestui domeniu al antropologiei, Lewis H. Morgan, cu a sa celebră Sisteme de consangvinitate şi de alianţă în familia umană, din 1870, urmată de analizarea conceptelor lui W.H. R. Rivers, expuse într-o lucrare din 1915. Urmează perspectiva lui K. B. Malinowski cu viziunea funcționalistă și cea a lui Alfred Reginald Radcliffe-Brown, dezvoltată în două subcapitole. Nu în ultimul rând, sunt abordate și viziunile lui Claude Lévi-Strauss și a structuralistului David Schneider, criticul sistemelor clasice și al descendenților acestora.” (Ion Cuceu din Prefață)
