„Lately, the capital of Roman Dacia, Apulum, has become a Roman archaeological objective researched thoroughly by an impressive number of rescue excavations, which pointed out an important number of private complexes, either military or funerary. Within this context, reevalu‑ation of the whole heritage preserved in the collection of the museum was, and became a manda‑tory need to integrate discoveries and to present them appropriately to know those of funerary character, mainly.This archaeological monograph proposed by George Bounegru represents analysis of sampled funerary discoveries resulted from the northern necropolis from Apulum. The samples of 161 graves predominantly represent personal researches included in the doctoral thesis of the author, as well as more rescue excavations carried out by Gheorghe Anghel, Ioan Alexandru Aldea, Cloșca L. Băluță, Radu Ciobanu, Vasile Moga, Alexandru Popa within this necropolis. De la începutul toamnei lui 1918, pe fondul apropierii sfârșitului războiului, devenise tot mai clar că Imperiul Austro‑Ungar va parcurge o criză politică fără precedent. În cuvintele lui Lucian Blaga, „mânjite de sânge, simbolurile imperiale se năruiau”. Principiile propovăduite de președintele american Woodrow Wilson încă din ianuarie, reluate și sporite în iulie, ce păreau să devină biblia noilor organizări politice ale lumii, au zdruncinat serios Imperiul în fundamentele sale multinaționale. Nici celelalte foste imperii multinaționale ale continentului, Țarist și Otoman, nu au avut o soartă mai bună, deși au trecut prin transformări de altă natură. Oricum, înfrângerea din tranșee devenise iminentă, iar învingătorii aveau să facă toate eforturile pentru a încuraja modelul statului național și peste ruinele puterilor învinse. Odată ivite orizonturile unor retrasări de granițe în spiritul libertății naționale, nici sârbii, bosniecii, croații, polonezii, cehii sau slovacii nu au mai luat în calcul ideea de a rămâne pe mai departe în structura vechiului stat, oricâte încercări de resuscitare ar fi încercat autoritățile pentru a salva de acum muribundul imperiu.
Românii ardeleni, îndrumați de o elită politică de excepție, cu Iuliu Maniu, Ștefan Cicio Pop, Teodor Mihali, Vasile Goldiș, Alexandru Vaida Voevod, Aurel Lazăr și alții, s‑au capacitat, intens și irepetabil, pentru a profita de contextul politic favorabil și a obține ruperea Transilvaniei de Ungaria și unirea ei cu România. Chiar dacă astăzi există voci, e drept, nu multe, care contestă forța și îmbrățișarea unanimă a motivațiilor românilor ardeleni, în realitate voința și vocea acestora au fost ferme pentru „divorțul” de Ungaria, chiar unanime la scară istorică. Mai înainte, în climatul din 1910 sau 1915, verbalizarea unui deziderat atât de îndrăzneț era periculoasă, echivalentă cu „trădarea națională”, astfel că a existat, desigur, un segment al elitei care a îndemnat la ponderație și la câștiguri naționale mai mărunte, dar mai ușor realizabile. Însă de îndată ce contextul istoric a permis‑o, targetul România Mare, până nu demult unul mai degrabă utopic, a fost asumat de toată lumea. „Teljès elszaydás” (Despărțire totală) a pronunțat Iuliu Maniu la negocierile cu partea maghiară de la jumătatea lunii noiembrie, sintetizând voința românilor ardeleni.
