FROM MACRO TO MINOR SECURITY: WATCHTOWERS, FORTLETS AND LINEAR FORTIFICATIONS ON THE FRONTIER OF DACIA POROLISSENSIS
160,00 lei
The minor fortifications lined along the frontier of Dacia Porolissensis are first discussed theoretically and classified into well-argued categories – which is a first in our historiography. Then we move on to the research history; a matter pursued with great seriousness and rigor, always in correlation with the European evolution of the Roman frontier’s research at each stage. The author can add his field research and more accurate mapping of these installations. Their spatial distribution is established rigorously and in close connection with the relief, highlighting the role of each – perfectly adapted to local topographical settings. The small finds category allows further innovative investigations into their particular role in the province’s security system, making it clear that small, fortified installations functioned as a highly reliable part of a well-articulated frontier system. In addition, another function of the frontier is highlighted – that of supervising the inner area of the province. The role of these small garrisons was not only military but also to ensure the functioning of the various links between the Roman province and the barbarian world in the vicinity. (Prof. PhD. Habil.
